African Australian Creative Media Grants

Stories have the power to connect people, educate and inspire. The African Australian Creative Media Grants exist so that the stories of African Australian communities are told and told by the people who live them.
The program grew out of roundtables with African Australian creatives, who shared a clear message: despite a wealth of vibrant stories, African media in Australia remains critically under-resourced. The grants respond directly to that gap by investing in the creativity, capability and sustainability of the individuals and organisations shaping African Australian storytelling.
The aim is threefold: to lift community voices by giving emerging creatives a vehicle for expression, to help platforms grow their reach and sustain their work, and to build a more diverse and representative Australian media landscape.
Since 2021 54 recipients have been supported, and the breadth of their work reflects the richness of the community. Funded initiatives include podcasts such as GalacticOz and Private Affairs, a community radio program, digital magazines, Africa Film Fest Australia, and original works like the graphic novel The Fog. Grants have also supported live events, from fashion showcases to music performances, and platforms such as the African Language Academy Australia that strengthen culture and connection.
Grants are offered through two streams: Platform Development, which helps creators grow and strengthen their platforms and Content Creation, which supports the making of original work. Each recipient shows what becomes possible when community talent is backed with resources and trust.
